After five matches without a win in the 2016/2017 Nigeria Professional Football League NPFL season, Akwa United Football Club of Uyo has vowed to hit the ground running on match day six when they will host newly promoted Remo Stars FC of Shagamu at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Sunday February 5, 2017.

Akwa United are bottom of the table with just three points from a possible fifteen and coach Abdul Maikaba has urged his players to stand up and be counted by ensuring they capture all three points when they face Remo Stars on Sunday.

Coach Maikaba expressed optimism that his team has what it takes to be champions at the end of the season.

“I have one hundred percent confidence in this team; our play is perfect and we are paying extra attention to the department that really needs improvement”.

“We may be bottom of the table now, but certainly people will be surprised with our achievement this season,” he said.

The former Wikki Tourists boss continued: “Our players are committed, they know the importance of every match and I am challenging them to show that they can do it. We have played five matches and we still have thirty-three more matches to play, so getting three points against Remo Stars is our target and I can assure our fans that we will push our way to the top and we will surely make everyone proud of us”.

The Promise Keepers have scored three and conceded six goals in five matches. Their three goals have come from the defence and midfield departments- Godspower Igudia against ABS, Cyril Olisema against Rivers United and Alhassan Ibrahim against Katsina United.

Midfielder Ifeanyi Ifeanyi believes that goalscoring is the responsibility of all the players and not for the strikers alone who are yet to get off the mark this season.

“Good things don’t come easy and we know that we need to sacrifice everything to get what we want. Irrespective of the fact that we are bottom of the table, we have an opportunity to prove that we can do it and we will put in our very best to make sure we beat Remo Stars and all other opponents” the midfielder promised.

Meanwhile latest reports coming from the camp of Remo Stars indicate that Coach Nduka Ugbade has parted ways with the club as both parties couldn’t reach an agreement regarding a new contract.
