Super Eagles’ Technical Adviser, Gernot Rohr has said South Africa’s Bafana Bafana are the main focus of the team and not new African champions, Cameroon.
Rohr made this submission when he spoke to newsmen after watching Remo Stars lose to Niger Tornadoes in a Match Day 7 NPFL game at the Gateway Stadium in Sagamu on Wednesday.
The French-born tactician said, his sight right now is on the 2019 AFCON qualifiers which comes up in June.
“South Africa is our next opponent, we play them in June for a place at the 2019 AFCON. They also did not qualify for the last edition and that means we should expect a stern battle from them. I understand that Nigerians are concerned about our progress to the 2018 World Cup in Russia, that is equally good; but don’t forget that we have not qualified for the AFCON since 2013 and the crucial game against South Africa is in June, so I want to focus on that”, reckoned Rohr.
Rohr is also upbeat about the Super Eagles’ chances of qualifying for the AFCON after serving as a pundit at Gabon 2017.
“I was at the AFCON in Gabon and I now realise what it means to be at the tournament. We also want to play at the AFCON and we must do everything possible to be there,” he added.
The Super Eagles are drawn in Group E of the AFCON qualifiers with South Africa, Seychelles and Libya, while they top Group B of the World Cup qualifying Africa section with six points ahead of Cameroon who have two points while Zambia and Algeria have one point each.
