Plateau United extended their leadership in the Nigeria Professional Football League table following their 5-1 home win against Gombe United in a match-day 24 encounter on Sunday.
A brace from Peter Eneji both from the penalty spot on six and 44 minutes and a goal each from Elisha Gombe, Kabiru Umar and Emeka Umeh in the 22nd, 79th and 83rd minutes respectively secured the win for Plateau United.
Gombe’s only goal was scored by Mannir Ubale in the ninth minute from the penalty spot.
Plateau are now on 45 points, five clear of second placed MFM FC of Lagos.
At the Agege Stadium, Stephen Odey returned to MFM’s starting eleven as they edged struggling Shooting Stars of Ibadan 1-0 at the Agege Stadium, Lagos.
The only goal of the game was scored by Monday Shishinma in the 21st minute off an assist from Shola Brossa.
The win took MFM to second in the league table on 40 points, while Shooting Stars dropped to the bottom.
Title contenders El Kanemi Warriors lost 3-0 away to Katsina United in a Northern clash.
A brace from Musa Suleiman in the first and 48th minutes and a solitary strike from Obinna Eleje on 74 minutes condemned El-Kanemi to their second defeat in their last three games (D1).
El Kanemi are now fifth in the table, eight points behind leaders Plateau United following the loss to Katsina United.
In the Oriental derby in Calabar, Enyimba beat Abia Warriors 2-1.
Both teams had a man sent off with three minutes left as Enyimba’s Kelly Kester and Chinedu Ozor of Abia Warriors were given their marching orders for misconduct.
Mfon Udoh scored twice in the 19th and 46th minute to put Enyimba 2-0 up.
In the 64th minute, Abia Warriors pulled a goal back through Chimezie Amanfour to make for a nervy end but Enyimba held on to claim the win.
Udoh’s brace means he has now scored 10 goals for Enyimba this season, who are now third with 38 points.
In Port Harcourt, FC IfeanyiUbah could not make it back-to-back wins as they lost 2-1 to Rivers United.
Rivers United took the lead thanks to Ayo Saka who converted a 60th minute penalty.
With 10 minutes left Prince Aggreh equalised for IfeanyiUbah also from the penalty spot.
But Efosa Eguakun won it for Rivers United in the 94th minute.
At the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu, champions Rangers halted their three-game winless run with a hard-fought 1-0 win against Akwa United.
Rangers’ goal came off the boot of Bright Silas in the 11th minute of the game.
And in the Sani Abacha Stadium, Kano Pillars defeated Sunshine Stars 3-1.
Three first half goals from Nyima Nwangwa (first minute) and Junior Lokosa (16th and 42nd minutes), gave Pillars a comfortable 3-0 lead.
In the 58th minute, Sunday Oluwadamilare scored for Sunshine to end the game 3-1.
In other results, Remo moved out of the bottom of the log to 19th spot after beating Nasarawa United 1-0, 10-man Lobi lost 1-0 away to ABS of Ilorin, while Wikki Tourists overcame visiting Niger Tornadoes 3-1.
