Former Super Eagles’ goalkeeper trainer, Ike Shorunmu has lauded the return of Chippa United goalie Daniel Akpeyi and Plateau United shot-stopper, Ayodele Ajiboye for the all-important Zambia World Cup qualifier in Uyo, saying it will offer good competition to Ezenwa ahead of the match.

Shorunmu, who spoke with AOIFootball.com exclusively, said those at the helm of affairs know how important the game is and know the team needs all the experience going into the game.

He said: “The people in charge of the team know why the three goalkeepers were invited and why Alampasu was put on standby for the clash.

“Nigerians need to understand that experience is very key going into this kind of game and Akpeyi can offer that to the team. Experience cannot be bought as we need all our best hands for the match against Zambia.

“The match is going to be a very tricky one as most people believe it’s done and dusted, but we must not underrate the Zambians going into the match.”

The former Besiktas shot-stopper believes the re-invitation of Daniel Akpeyi will help keep Ikechukwu Ezenwa on his toes.

“For Akpeyi and Ajiboye to be invited shows the coach has seen something in both goalkeepers and believes they have what it takes to give him the kind of competition he needs, which is very laudable for me.

“Ezenwa has been doing marvelously well between the sticks. I mean, nobody gave him a chance against Cameroon in the last qualifiers but he shone like a million stars and was also impressive in the WAFU tournament because you can’t obviously use one game to judge a goalkeeper. He’s doing well for the Eagles and I believe Nigerians should continue to encourage him, but he should expect a stiff competition from Akpeyi and Ajiboye for the starting shirt on the match day,” posited Ajiboye.

Daniel Akpeyi makes a return to the team after he missed the Cameroon double-header due to injury, while Dele Ajiboye retained his place in the team from the last clash against the Indomitable Lions after he was called up as a late replacement for the Chippa United man.
