Former Super Eagles’ midfielder, Garba Lawal has urged Coach Gernot Rohr to ignore calls by several Nigerians that Super Eagles left back Elderson Echiejile should be axed from the 2018 World Cup squad.
Lawal, who spoke exclusively to AOIFootball.com, admitted the player’s experience will be needed at The World Cup in Russia next year.
“It’s unfortunate that age is no longer on Echiejile’s side, but we cannot underestimate the tremendous impact he has also brought to the national team in the last few years and I believe he still has what it takes to play at the big stage,” Lawal noted.
Echiejile, who was forced to sit out Nigeria’s last two games due to injury, with the likes of Ola Aina and new boy Brian Idowu impressing in that position, leaves fears in the heart of the left back but Garba Lawal believes his experience is very key and the team handlers must be very tactical in selecting the players.
“No doubt, the new guys have been impressive but his experience speaks volumes and you know it’s the World Cup where experience counts because just like in 2002 World Cup in Korea /Japan, Mutiu Adepoju went to the World Cup though he didn’t play, but he offered the team experience and advice.
“The decision now lies within the coaches; they should be in the right position to determine what his best for the team,” Lawal concluded.
