Nigerian striker, Taiwo Awoniyi came off the bench to make his debut for new club KAA Gent but could not prevent them from losing 3-2 to Uche Agbo’s Standard Liege on the opening night of the Jupiler League, AOIFootball.com reports.

With Moses Simon out with injury, Coach Yves Vanderhaeghe opted to leave out the duo of Kalu and Esiti on the bench, with Gent going down after ten minutes when Moussa Djenepo put the home side ahead before a stoppage-time equaliser from Roman Yaremchuko levelled matters before the halftime break.

With Agbo dominating the midfield, Gent turned to the bench for extra support at the middle of the park, introducing Anderson Esiti but that did not effectively work as they conceded a second just on the stroke of the hour mark when Paul-Jose Mpoku fired in from 12 yards.

Awoniyi was then introduced to help find the equaliser in the 71st minute but again it was the home side that scored when Renaun Edmunt made it 3-1 in the 78th minute before a late consolation from Stallone Limbombe ensured a nervy finish to the clash.
