Following the sudden retirement of former Super Eagles and Chelsea winger, Victor Moses, Super Eagles’ Manager, Gernot Rohr will have his hands full in a bid to revert to his original 4-3-3 formation, with the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2019 qualifiers set to resume in September.
AOIFootball.com reviews four players who can jostle for a starting shirt in that position:
Ahmed Musa: Naturally, Musa’s position in the Eagles should not be in contention with the super performance he put up at the recent World Cup in Russia.
Musa has over the years made the position his but an ill-fated move to former English Premier League champions Leicester City caused him his starting shirt in the Super Eagles. But following another impressive turn up in Russia, Coach Gernot Rohr may turn to the Al Nassr of Saudi Arabia winger to fully take the vacant wing position left by Moses.
Moses Simon: He missed the World Cup because of a late injury just before Gernot Rohr named his final squad for the tournament. Simon was one of the best performers following Nigeria’s qualification for the tournament but was disappointed not to have made the cut. However, the pacey winger has moved on and that includes moving to the Spanish LaLiga from Belgium.
The former AS Trencin man will now turn up for UD Levante and has said he is hoping to make a huge return to the Super Eagles. Prior to the World Cup, Simon maintained his starting shirt in almost all the qualifiers he featured in and may be well ready to reclaim his wing role, especially with the retirement of Victor Moses. He may yet make his role a permanent one.
Henry Onyekuru: The former KAS Eupen man is yet to be given his chance in the Super Eagles after two recent invitations, featuring fewer minutes in games against Togo and Algeria. Now might be his time. Onyekuru made a mark during his time with former Belgian champions Anderlecht but got injured midway into the season; this totally cut short his progress.
The Aspire Academy product is however back and better and with an impressive loan move to Turkish giants Galatasaray, he certainly wants another invite and will be comfortable in the wing position for the Eagles. He has got great footwork, pace and is a super finisher.
Alex Iwobi: The Arsenal man’s position in the Eagles is yet to be ascertained with Gernot Rohr trying him out in different positions during the qualifiers and even at the World Cup.
But Iwobi, has excelled in the wing role for Arsenal under former manager Arsene Wenger and new manager Unai Emery also prefers him in the same wing.
Pacey, nimble-footed and a great passer of the ball, Iwobi will perfectly fit in the wing position for the Eagles.
