Nigeria’s Super Eagles rallied to earn their first victory in the AFCON 2019 qualification series, defeating their less fancied hosts, Seychelles 3-0 at the Stade Lenite Stadium on Saturday, AOIFootball.com reports.
In what was clearly a match between David and Goliath, the Eagles impressed in the opening exchanges despite the bumpy nature of the pitch and took the lead in the 15th minute when stand-in captain Ahmed Musa scored his 17th international goal to put Nigeria one goal up.
With pressure mounting on the Seychellois to get a first win in over 10 games, they conceded a free-kick in a dangerous position which was well taken by Kelechi Iheanacho.
His effort stroked the upright before Awaziem reacted quickest to tuck home his first international goal for Nigeria. The halftime score became 2-0.
The Eagles came out smoking in the second half with the lively Samuel Kalu causing a whole lot of problems on the flanks before he was brought down in the box on the hour mark.
Striker Odion Ighalo stepped up and confidently dispatched the ball beyond the goalkeeper, ending his 9- game goal drought.
Gernot Rohr’s men ran out comfortable 3-0 winners.
The result now leaves Nigeria with 3 points, one behind leaders Libya and South Africa, who have 4 points each after playing out a goalless draw on Saturday.
