Super Eagles’ Samuel Chukwueze will have to continue his development without Spanish coach Javi Calleja who has been shown the exit door by Villarreal after the club’s disappointing 3-2 home loss at the weekend to Celta Vigo, AOIFootball.com reports.
Calleja 40, promoted Chukwueze from the youth ranks at the start of the season after previously working with the U-17 World Cup winner during his time with the club’s B team.
“Villarreal CF has decided to rescind the contract of Javi Calleja as coach of the first team. The club wants to thank the coach for his work, dedication, and professionalism in front of the yellow bench since he took office at the beginning of last year in the first team and wishes him the best of luck in his sporting career,” the club wrote after announcing the departure of Calleja from the club.
Calleja replaced Fran Escriba in September 2017, leading the club to a top-five finish last season, but a series of poor results have left the club’s hierarchy with no choice than to let him go on a mutual basis.
