Nigeria’s sole representatives in the CAF Champions League, Lobi Stars, began their campaign with an impressive win after coming from behind to beat South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns 2-1 at the Cathedral Stadium in Enugu on Friday, AOIFootball.com reports.

Knowing the hope of the country rests on their shoulders, the Solomon Ogbedie-led boys came into the game with plenty of commitment and vigor and could have gone ahead in the opening exchanges but for wastefulness in front of goal.

Lobi Stars fluffed a rare chance to take the lead before the half-hour mark after a pass caught out Sundown’s defence on the right side of the box, but right-back John Lazarus’ cross lacked the pace and quality to outsmart Mweene.

The visitors then took the lead 8 minutes later when Liberian striker, Anthony Laffor put Sundowns ahead after finishing off a trademark move to put the South Africans ahead.

Shortly before the interval, Solomon Ogbeide’s wards leveled from the spot when Ricardo fouled Sunday Adetunji who was clear on goal in the area and Kone stepped up to send Mweene the wrong way as both teams went into the break level.

The home side came into the second half with more determination and was only denied by Mweene who produced two stunning saves in the 49th minute to deny Adetunji from putting Lobi in front.

However, the Nigerian side was not to be denied as they went ahead shortly after via the boot of Samuel Mathias.

Lobi then held on for all three points as they ended Sundowns’ unbeaten 9-game run to momentarily go top of Group A ahead of Wydad Athletic and ASEC Mimosa who play late Friday night.
