Nigeria’s sole representative in this season’s CAF Champions League, Lobi Stars of Markurdi have crashed out of the competition 3-0 loss to South Africa”s Mamelodi Sundowns at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Saturday night, AOIFootball.com reports.
The Nigerians side were condemned to avoid defeat following Asec Mimosa’s 2-0 win earlier in the day against Wydad but fell to three first-half goals as the South Africans progressed to the next round of the competition with a game to spare.
Sundowns got off to the perfect start on the night with Thapelo Morena giving them the lead only two minutes into the game after he latched onto a pinpoint pass from Gaston Sirino and finished with aplomb from close range to make it 1-0.
The home side continued to pile on the pressure, but only managed to double their lead in the 38th minute when Themba Zwane produced a clinical finish from just inside the box.
A minute later Sundowns found their third goal courtesy of Lebohang Maboe who dribbled past a few Lobi defenders before firing home from 18-yards out to make it 3-0 at the break.
In the second half, the Brazilians took their foot off the pedal and seemed content to protect their three-goal lead.
Lobi Stars tried to find their way back into the game and threw players forward in attack, but the Sundowns defense stood firm to hold on for a comfortable victory.
Lobi who remain on four points from five games will now host Asec Mimosa in their final group game but will still go out on the head to head rule even if they pick a win with Wydad looking likely to pick the second qualification spot.
