Captain of Nigeria’s Olympic team, Azubuike Okechukwu has hailed the selection of players by head coach Imama Amapakabo for Nigeria’s all important qualifier against Sudan, stating that the mixture of foreign-based professionals and the local ones will help the team to victory, AOIFootball.com reports.
The Istanbul Basaksehir midfielder, who spoke to AOIFootball.com ahead of the game on Thursday, further promised Nigerians that despite not having plenty of time to group as a unit, the squad is very much determined to pick the ticket for the main tournament in November.
“It’s a very good squad for me; the coaches have done a great job in assembling the players and we will ensure that we make Nigerians proud and deliver the needed win to seal qualification to the tournament in Egypt.
“We have Awoniyi and Muyiwa from the last game against Libya, although we lost a couple of players who will not be part of the match but we also have some fresh faces and with the home base players who have also been training in Abuja, i am confident we can defeat them,” Azubuike added.
Having led Nigeria to clinch the 2015 AFCON U-23 Championship, the combative midfielder however played down the pressure of leading the squad again, stating that he will use his experience to guide the squad.
Nigeria face Sudan in the first leg of the final qualifiers on Thursday in Ombudsman before hosting the return leg five days later in Asaba with the winner advancing to the main tournament in Egypt.
