Super Eagles’ new poster boy, Victor Osimhen picked up from where he left off last year when he scored his first goal of the New Year to help Lille reach the semifinals of the Coupe de la Ligue after beating Amiens 2-0, AOIFootball.com reports.
With a place in the last four up for grabs, the Nigerian was named in the starting XI for the second time in the competition as he led the line alongside Luiz Arujo in a conventional 4-4-2 formation.
Despite seeing a chunk of the ball in the first half, Lille failed to make the most of their possession count with the red card to Amiens Bongani Zungu the major highlight of the first 45 minutes.
The hosts will, however, spring into gear in the second half and deservedly took the lead in spectacular fashion when Arujo rifled home a rocket from the edge of the area to bring the entire stadium to its feet and put the host 1-0 up.
Osimhen then made it 2-0 eight minutes later when he calmly controlled a through ball from Boubakary Soumare before beating his marker comfortably and slotting beyond the reach of the goalkeeper to seal a semifinal berth.
The strike now takes Osimhen tally of the season to 14 goals as he continues to grow his stock with series of impressive performances.
