Former Super Eagles, captain John Obi Mikel has been praised by Stoke City fans after his impressive performance in their opening game of the 2020/2021 season, AOIFootball.com reports.
The former Chelsea of England midfielder, who made his competitive debut for the club in what was his second coming to the Championship, having also played in the colors of Middlesbrough, received plenty of encomiums from the Potters’ fans who believe his presence could help them return to the EPL after their relegation 3 years ago.
The 33-year-old joined the club as a free agent last month from the Turkish side Trabzonspor in March and was immediately given a starter’s berth, with Mikel showing he can continue to play at the highest and most competitive level even till his mid-30s.
Mikel’s presence in the middle of the park was eminent for the visitors who hoped to use his experience in the Championship to help them return to the EPL having narrowly missed out on a playoff spot with his Middlesbrough side.
Stoke will however turn their attention to Thursday night’s EFL Cup second round tie away at Wolverhampton Wanderers, with head coach Micheal O’Neill hoping the player’s experience in the competition when he was at Chelsea will be a motivating factor for the rest of his squad.
