Rangers International 1 – 0 Plateau United
Daniel Etor delivered an outstanding display and scored the only goal of the game as fallen giants Enugu Rangers won a keenly contested game against Plateau United at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium.
The home team gave the fans the old feeling of the ‘Cathedral’ with a third successive home win, as their performances in front of their own supporters continue to improve, although league leaders United were a tough test for their recent resurgence.
Rangers were the dominant team early on as they unsettled United with some breathtaking possession football.
On the quarter-hour mark, Chidera Eze was brought down in United’s box, but Dele Ajiboye guessed right to keep out Chibuzor Madu’s spot kick.
Rangers kept up the pressure and took the lead in the 22nd minute through Etor, but Jimmy Ambrose almost responded immediately for Plateau United when his well struck effort was saved by Seidu Mutawakili. Ifeanyi George later capitalised on some slack defending to beat Ajiboye, but placed his final-effort wide.
Despite the visitors’ efforts, Rangers held on for a win to leave them 16th on the table, while Plateau United maintain a two-point lead at the summit.
Rivers United 1 – 0 Remo Stars
Rivers United earned a first league win in three games after Bernard Ovoke scored the only goal of the game to down struggling Remo Stars in the first-ever league meeting between the pair.
Erstwhile star man Ovoke, who had been sidelined by coach Stanley Eguma for the majority of the season, earned a rare start and duly responded in the best possible way, netting a 41st-minute winner for the home side.
Stopper Abiodun Akande had a busy day in goal for United, as he was regularly called upon to keep the visiting forwards at bay, with Chidume Victor having a fine free kick deflected into the goalkeeper’s path.
The result takes Rivers United up to 13th, while the Sky Blues Stars remain rooted to the bottom of the table and must improve significantly during the second half of the campaign if they’re to retain their top flight status.
