Former Nigeria international, Friday Elaho, has said that Nigerian players disappear into thin air after shining in the various age grade competitions because they falsify their ages.
The former Brondby midfielder, who spoke exclusively with Aoifootball.com, noted that Nigeria failed to qualify for the last Africa Youth Championship because of not using players of the right ages, stressing that even if we use players of the right age and fail to qualify, the heavens will not fall.
“We failed to qualify for the last AYC (U-17 & U-20) because we are not really using the right people to play these tournaments. Nigeria is not only guilty in this as other African countries do the same.”
“We are not encouraging football in Africa by doing this; it doesn’t mean that if we use a 16-year-old to play Under 17 competitions and we lose, the heavens will fall down.It is a grassroots tournament. If you think using over-aged players to win competitions is tantamount to helping the country, you are not helping the country.”
“Check our players who were stars at the U-17 level. They are nowhere to be found; you can’t find them anywhere unlike their counterparts in other parts of the world,” lamented Elaho.
