The President, Nigeria Referees Association, Tade Azeez, has said that his desire and that of the federation is to see the country’s referees crisscrossing the globe and officiating at different FIFA and CAF tournaments.

According to him, we need our referees out there at different competitions so that they can be in the best grade in Africa which is the ‘Elite A’ Category, that would enable them officiate at World Cup finals.

Tade told exclusively that it takes a long process for a referee to officiate in World Cup finals as they need to be assessed and re-assessed, stressing that with the current training and retraining of Nigerian referees, the eldorado was not too far away.

“We in this country are used to saying that Nigerian referees don’t go for international competitions, but I can boldly say that in the last 2 or 3 years, our referees have started going to various African countries to officiate, which is what we need.

“We need to go for competitions for FIFA and CAF, so that Nigerian referees can be in the best category which we call the Elite A in CAF. This would give us an advantage of going to the World Cup which is the essence.

“I know you don’t go to the World Cup in a day, as you need to be assessed and reassessed to make it to the global football showpiece. Our aim is to see our referees everywhere in the world; we will keep on training and retraining them to get them to the level we want them to be,” he concluded.
