Contrary to reports in some sections of the media, that Chippa United FC of South Africa goalie, Daniel Akpeyi may not be invited for the Nigeria’s 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Cameroon, can report that the former Warri Wolves shot-stopper is still a favourite among the pool of goalkeepers available for the team.
Various reports in the media had after the 2-0 loss to the Bafana Bafana of South Africa in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier reported that Coach Gernot Rohr may not invite Akpeyi for future games, but investigations carried out have revealed it may be far from the reality as he is still rated highly and may only get new tips from new goalkeeper’ trainer Enrico Pionetti.
The Italian is expected to continue work on the locally based goalkeepers after the CHAN qualifiers against Benin Republic and will extend same to Akpeyi when the camp for the World Cup qualifiers resume in the last week of August.
