The return of Super Eagles’ captain, Mikel John Obi is a good omen for the three-time African champions, so says former Nigerian international Edema Fuludu.
The former Chelsea star, who joined Chinese side Tianjin Teda in March, has been out injured for four months following an abdominal injury during a league game.
While out injured, Mikel missed Nigeria’s friendly against Togo in France and the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations’ 2-0 home loss to the Bafana Bafana of South Africa.
The midfielder however returned to the pitch for his club on Monday but was on the losing side after his team fell 2-0 against Chinese Super League side Hebei CFFC.
Speaking ahead of the World Cup qualifiers Fuludu believes the captain’s return will be a big boost for Nigeria ahead of the back-to-back 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against African champions Cameroon.
“It’s a big relief. I must say Mikel’s return will boost the morale of our young team. It’s good that he has returned this early, he would have time to play more games, get more competitive and readily fit for the games,” he said.
Fuludu urged the Nigeria Football Federation to ensure the team gets all the motivation needed to win in Uyo and also get a result in Yaounde.
