Super Eagles’ and Everton FC of England loanee, Henry Onyekuru put up a man of the match performance when he scored a brace as RSC Anderlecht edged past home team, KV Mechelen at the Veolistadion Achter De Kazerne in the Belgium top division.
The 20- year-old striker, who was the match winner before the International break against Club Brugge, started in an unfamiliar position as he was deployed as a left wing- back in a much changed 3-4-3 formation by Coach Hein Van Haezebrouck.
However, he continued from where he stopped just before the break when he doubled Anderlecht’s lead in the 30th minute when he raced on to a fantastic through ball from Sofiane Hanni to maintain his composure and slot past the onrushing goalkeeper to make it 2-0.
Onyekuru grabbed his brace and Anderlecht’s third 7 minutes later when he latched on to a pass from Pieter Gerkens and tossed the ball round the edge of the box before unleashing a thunderbolt of a strike past the Mechelen goalkeeper to make it 3 – 1 to the away side much to the delight of their fans.
The goal was the former AS Eupen striker’s 6th league goal of the current campaign and 7th in all competitions this season as he continues to push for a return to the Super Eagles’ squad against Algeria next month in Algiers.
The striker will now turn his attention to arguable one of his biggest career games yet, when Anderlecht take on free- spending Paris St Germain in the Champions League on Tuesday as he hopes to score his first goal in the competition after failing to find the net against Bayern Munich and Celtic, respectively.
