The low rating of the Super Eagles, first by the FIFA rankings and secondly by the recently concluded Aiteo CAF Awards, will eventually be a blessing in disguise, according to Assistant Coach of the team, Imama Amapakabo.
The Super Eagles’ rating has plummeted on the monthly FIFA rankings with the team dropping about 14 places despite recording impressive results in competitive games against Cameroon, Zambia and highly-rated Argentina between October to December and also lost out in the recently concluded CAF’s National team of the year accolade to Hector Cuper’s Egypt. But Amapakabo believes the poor ratings are a blessing in disguise for the Gernot Rohr- tutored team, whilst also positing that the Eagles will prove the rankings wrong in Russia.
“I think we are not bothered about the dismal rankings and ratings the team has had recently. It is a good thing because the focus will not be on us; we certainly will enjoy the outsider’s ratings but we have to prove everyone wrong,” Imama told AOIFootball.com.
