*Speaks on Uzoho, Ikeme, Ezenwa
Super Eagles’ Technical Adviser, Gernot Rohr has shed more light on his team’s goalkeeping situation, saying he is still hoping for a miraculous recovery for first choice shot-stopper Carl Ikeme, whilst insisting the situation with Enyeama is almost impossible, reports.
The Franco-German tactician, who spoke at the FIFA workshop in Sochi Russia, said he and his coaching staff are working round the clock to ensure they select the safest hands for the Eagles ahead of the World Cup in Russia.
On Francis Uzoh, Rohr said he was satisfied with the report of Pionnetti and is looking forward to working with the goalkeeper again for the upcoming matches.
“As you know, I sent the goalkeeper trainer to the young Uzoh in Spain. He spent 10 days at LA Coruna, checked in with the goalkeeping staff there and was received well, as well as watched him in training and matches.
“We don’t have many solutions in this position so it will be good to work with Uzoho again ahead of the World Cup. I got a good report about his training and I am satisfied with that,” Rohr said.
On Carl Ikeme, the Eagles’ handler said the time is too short for him but still hopes for a miracle.
“You know right now he is sick. It will be too short for him ahead of the World Cup, but we would like to have him back”.
Speaking on Ikechukwu Ezenwa, Rohr said he is monitoring his progress from injury and hopes to have him fit for the game against Poland and Serbia.
“For Ezenwa, he worked very well with our physio to come back to fitness. He’s in the third phase of his preparation, so I hope he will be ready for the friendly matches later this month,” said Rohr.
On Vincent Enyeama the Eagles tactician said the situation is impossible because he can’t call a player who is not playing.
“Enyeama is not playing at the moment and somebody who is not playing cannot come to the national team. In the beginning, I wanted him but he didn’t come because of the issues in the past so its unlikely if he will return to the team” Rohr said.
When quizzed if the door is closed on the former Super Eagles’ captain, Rohr gave this reply:
“The door is closed for nobody but somebody who is not playing cannot come because it is a rule of selection, especially in this kind of goalkeeping position.
It’s understood that Rohr will stick with the trio of Uzoho, Ezenwa, and Akpeyi for the games against Poland and Serbia, with Ajiboye expected to be placed on standby.
