Former Super Eagles’ left-back Celestine Babayaro has hailed Coach Gernot Rohr for not bowing to pressure from some people who believe Elderson Echiejile has outlived his usefulness in the national team, AOIFootball.com reports.
The experienced and widely traveled Echiejile was given a chance by Rohr to do battle with new boy Bryan Idowu for a place in the Eagles’ left-back position.
Babayaro however believes that the player’s experience will be very crucial, having played for the country for a very long time and can stand in as a motivator to the young guys coming in.
“He may not be having the best of times at his club but he is fit and highly experienced. You can’t buy that; you have to earn it and he has done well for himself. In a young squad like ours, you need a player like Echiejile,“ Babayaro told Owngoal.
Echiejile missed the last World Cup in 2014 due to injury and will be keen to impress the coaches ahead of the Eagles’ next three build-up games even as he looks good to make Rohr’s final 23 to Russia.
