Super Eagles’ Head Coach, Gernot Rohr, has revealed that he still hopes Brighton of England defender, Leon Balogun can feature for Nigeria in their World Cup opener against Croatia on Saturday night, insisting he will wait on the final medical report, AOIFootball.com reports.
The Franco-German, who spoke at the Eagles’ pre-match press conference in Kaliningrad, revealed that he is confident of other defenders that could replace Balogun should he finally miss the clash.
“Its unfortunate the situation with our player, Balogun; you know already that he’s injured but I and the medical staff will asses him just before the game to see if he’s able to play, but for now he still has a slim chance to play.
“You know already we have Omeruo, Awaziem and now Ogu who can play in that position; so hopefully we will see what will happen tomorrow but I’m confident in the rest of the defenders to do the job for us on the pitch,” Rohr added.
With so much pressure on his team to at least get a point from the game in Kaliningrad, Rohr was not willing to put pressure on his team, insisting they have worked hard since the loss to the Czech Republic and will be ready for the match.
“We know how important this match is to the entire country and we won’t disappoint our fans. The FA president spoke to us and motivated us today so I believe you will see a much-improved display tomorrow,” Rohr concluded.
