Ahead of next month’s doubleheader AFCON 2019 qualifiers against the Mediterranean Knights of Libya, Super Eagles’ Head Coach, Gernot Rohr will this week name his 25-man squad that will prosecute the must-win clash, can authoritatively report.
The Franco-German is expected to keep faith with the core of the players that prosecuted the Eagles’ last matches against Seychelles and Libya with the duo of Shehu Abdullahi and Moses Simon likely to make the list following their return from injuries.
However, feelers from the Eagles’ camp reveal that captain Mikel John Obi could also make his return with Rohr particularly worried with the lack of playing time of defenders’ Chidozie Awaziem and Kenneth Omeruo who are both yet to feature for their respective clubs this season.
Impressive from his debut outing with the National team, attacker Samuel Kalu his expected to keep his place in the squad whilst the likes of Troost-Ekong, Ola Aina and Alex Iwobi who missed the last game through injury should be available for selection.
One man who is, however, pushing for a place in the national team, has to be Enyimba goalkeeper Theophilus Afelokhai who has been in superb form of late for the Aba giants in the Confederation Cup and could be rewarded with a call-up for his impressive display.
The Eagles’ are expected to begin camping from Monday the 8th of October with the first leg scheduled for Saturday 13th October, in Nigeria, before both teams meet again in Tunis four days later for the return leg.
Nigeria is currently third in the group with 3 points one behind Libya and South Africa who have 4 points respectively after two rounds of qualifiers played.
