Mikel returned to English football after he signed for Championship side, Middlesbrough in January
Super Eagles’ captain and new Middlesbrough signing, Mikel John Obi was pleased to make his debut and get some minutes under his belt on a bittersweet afternoon in the Emirates FA Cup against Newport County on Saturday, reports.
The former Chelsea midfielder signed on Thursday and was straight into the starting line-up for the Tony Pulis-led side for the fourth round tie against the Exiles.
Despite a late equalizer from County to force Boro into a replay, Mikel, who played an hour, was happy to get some minutes into his legs and is aiming for more game time.
“I thought the performance was good. When you play these games, we were one up, we controlled the game and it’s one of those games where if you sit back you can get caught out and that’s what happened.
“The team played really well, it’s a good start for me and hopefully we can carry on from here. Today was good and hopefully I can get a few more games to get sharper and help the team a bit more,” Mikel said.
The former Tianjin Teda midfielder had a game rating of 7.1, completed 86% of his passes and also won all but one of his seven duels in the clash.
