Akwa United’s Mfon Udoh scored for the third game in a row as they held Abia Warriors to a 1-1 draw in a Matchday 9 game decided at the Umuahia Township Stadium on Thursday, reports.
The visitors went into the game on the back of a three-game winning sequence but will be glad to have left their favourite away ground with a point for the third successive meeting after Udoh’s 33rd-minute goal canceled out Chinedu Ozor’s 28th-minute effort for the hosts.
A one minute’s silence was held at the start of the game and in the 65th minute in honour of the late former Secretary-General of the Nigeria Football Association, Taiwo Ogunjobi who died on Monday in Ibadan.
It was Warriors that dominated the opening exchanges although scoring chances were few and far between as both teams failed to significantly pull a save off the goalkeepers.
The hosts deservedly went in front just before the half-hour mark when midfielder Shedrack Asiegbu’s in-swinging corner from the right was met by defender Ozor who produced a fantastic strike to beat Cameronian goalkeeper Jean Efela for the first time in four matches to hand the host a 1-0 lead.
The lead, however, lasted for just five minutes as the League’s top scorer, Mfon Udoh punished their carelessness at the back to strike home his fifth league goal of the campaign.
The second half produced very few in terms of goal scoring opportunities in spite of the hosts’ forward play but it was Akwa who held on to claim their second league point on the road.
The draw stretches Akwa United ’s unbeaten run to four matches after winning their last three games and they remain 4th with 12 points from eight games played so far.
