Super Eagles’ captain, Mikel John Obi signed off his loan deal with Championship side Middlesbrough on a perfect note as he helped the club to a 2-1 win over Rotherham United, reports.

With his short term deal set to expire this month, the former Chelsea anchorman started his eighteenth successive Championship match as he captained Boro who were hoping for a miracle to make the playoff rounds.

Rotherham had already been relegated to League One and they handed in-form Semi Ajayi yet another start in the midfield with the versatile defender playing his last possible game for the club following rumours of a potential summer move.

The visitors however drew first blood via the boot of in-form forward Britt Assombalonga who converted from 12 yards to give Boro the lead on the 28th minute.

Mikel however saved his best moment in a Boro shirt for last when made it 2-0 on the 37th minute after firing home a loose corner kick that fell to his feet.

Michael Smith then grabbed a late consolation for the hosts as he converted from 12 yards four minutes from time with Middlesbrough ending the season just off the playoff zone to finish 7th on the log.

Ajayi will however turn his attention to next month African Cup of Nations with the Super Eagles whilst Mikel who remains a part of Gernot Rohr plans for the AFCON will have to make a decision on his availability for the competition
