The long-awaited commencement of the Nigeria Professional Football League finally got underway amidst some unexpected, but well-deserved results, reports.
Notable among the outstanding performances by the top-flight teams was the invasion of Delta State clubs by teams from Akwa Ibom.
The John Obuh led Akwa United FC forced NPFL returnees, Warri Wolves FC to a 1-1 draw at the Warri Township Stadium. A second-minute goal by Amadi Samuel was canceled by Mfon Udoh in the 28th minute.
At the the other end of the state, in Asaba, it took a Bala Yahuza equaliser in the79th minute, to ensure that newly promoted Akwa Starlets FC didn’t completely plunder the Delta Ambassadors, as the Okowa boys are fondly called, after going a goal down in the 50th minute by Isaac George of Akwa Starlets FC.
In other venues, just a little across the Niger, new acquisition for FC IfeanyiUbah, Samuel Kalu gave his side the bragging right after 90 minutes, when in the 40th minute he scored the only goal that handed them the victory against newly promoted Adamawa United FC.
In Okigwe, a goalkeeping error by Veteran, Ikechukwu Ezenwa, gave Mountain of Fire and Miracle Ministries MFM FC the victory, denying coach Fidelis Ikechukwu the opportunity of having a meaningful start in his new assignment.
Current Federation Cup Champions couldn’t make it count without their talismanic skipper, Rabiu Ali, as they were held to a goalless draw by the Pride of Rivers State, Rivers United FC.
Wikki Tourists FC came from behind to beat newcomers, Jigawa Golden Stars FC in Gombe, while Plateau United FC defeated Lobi Stars FC 3-1 in Jos.
