Super Eagles Head Coach Gernot Rohr has revealed that returning Kaizer Chiefs of South Africa goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi will start in goal against Benin Republic after series of impressive performances in the PSL, AOIFootball.com reports.
The Franco-German stated that the team has not been lucky with goalkeeper situations and says it will be counterproductive to hand young Maduka Okoye his full debut in tough African terrain.
“Unfortunately, we have not been lucky in terms of goalkeeper situations. We lost Carl before the World Cup and then we had Uzoho not playing regularly last season for his club then he came back with a good form and got injured again.
“But we are working hard on this position with the Alloy the goalkeeper coach and all the staff. For Maduka, it was not easy for him to come on in the 66 minute against a team like Brazil and he did we, but unfortunately, this is African football and he doesn’t know much about it.
“He has only had one training session, so starting him won’t be the right gift for him, so we will be very careful not to burn him maybe perhaps we have the chance to see Daniel Akpeyi again who has been doing well for his club and has a whole lot of experience.
“We also have Ezenwa who has not been playing regularly so maybe you can find a solution to tomorrow already,” Rohr concluded.
