Days after making public the list of 24 Eagles to take on the Leon Stars of Sierra Leone in this month’s doubleheader AFCON qualifiers, Coach Gernot Rohr has explained the reason for his choice of players even as he expressed confidence in their abilities, reports.

The Franco-German, who spoke exclusively to, stated that he will continue to role out the best of legs for the country whilst also stating that they had their homework done on newly invited duo of Cyriel Dessers and Kingsley Ehizibue.

“We try to build a good list and we could approach these two players (Cyriel and Kingsley). We met them, we spoke to them and explained how the spirit in the team was, how we play and they were okay with it,” Rohr said.

“We had good observation of all the players, the scouting team did a lot of work and I saw them play myself. Last week I was with the agent of Kingsley in Koln and I also met with Dessers in London,” Rohr added.

The 2019 AFCON Bronze medalists further revealed that although his newly invited additions have played for other countries at youth level, he is confident that they are ready to take up the adventure and wear the Green and White jersey of Nigeria.

Three-time African champion Nigeria currently tops Group L of the 2021 AFCON qualifiers with 6 points, 3 ahead of second-place Benin Republic whilst the duo of Sierra Leone and Lesotho have one point each.
