Nigerian international, Taiwo Awoniyi got off to the perfect start for the new year as he produced his finest display yet to help Union Berlin to a 0-2 win away at Werder Bremen, reports.


Having ended last year on a high, the 23-year-old started his 9th league game of the campaign partnering Sheraldo Becker in attack as the visitors opted for a flat 5-3-2 formation.


The Liverpool loanee however needed just 12 minutes to make his impact felt as he set up strike partner Sheraldo to put the visitors ahead for 1-0.


Awoniyi then doubled his side’s lead 16 minutes later, this time benefiting from a Robert Andrich assist to strike between the goalkeeper’s legs and put Union Berlin 2-0 up.


The former U-17 World Cup winner was then replaced seven minutes from time as his side claimed their first 3 points of the season and move up to 4th on the log with 24 points from 14 games.


The strike takes Awoniyi’s tally of the season to 5 league goals whilst also contributing one assist from just 9 starts this campaign.
