Little-known Nigerian prodigy,  Orji Nelson Chukwuma, has vowed to become Africa’s most expensive defender in the future, reports.
The 18-year-old FC Porto player, who was signed from Super Star Football Academy in Nigeria, is currently on loan at Zalaegerszegi TE Football Club in Hungary.
Whilst narrating his career sojourn, he stated that self-belief and hard work have been his watchword after a very tough beginning filled with several failed attempts.
“Back then in Nigeria, it was very tough and rough with a lot of challenges and obstacles. I also failed many times but I kept on believing in myself,” Chukwuma said.
He explained further that the key moment in his career came amidst another failed attempt with Nigeria Under 17 national team when he got dropped after making it to the shortlist of forty best players selected from over three thousand kids in 2018.
“I got a little exposure than in the Under 17, and that really kept me going; it gave me confidence that since I could make it that far with the Golden Eaglets, then I can make it with my hopes of becoming a professional footballer.”
“My dream in Europe is to play for Real Madrid and to be the most expensive African defender. Before I left Nigeria, I wrote all these things in a diary. I said to myself, Nelson, you must be Africa’s most expensive defender. I always believe that and I’m working towards it,” he said.
Nelson also said he had some role models as he hopes to become Africa’s most expensive defender someday.
“I love Sergio Ramos and follow him because of his leadership qualities. He is a true leader.
“I also follow Cristiano Ronaldo because of his attitude and mentality. He always wants to win. So I take that from him”
“I follow Virgil Van Dijk because of his abilities. He is the type of defender that senses danger before it occurs and he tackles it calmly, as well as Thiago Silva who I follow because of his calmness,” Chukwuma concluded.
