Nigeria’s Umar Sadiq scored his 14th league goal of the campaign for promotion chasers, Almeria, as they defeated Girona 1-0 away from home to leapfrog Espanyol into second place on the table, reports.

Having scored one and assisted another in his last league fixture against CD Lugo, the former AS Roma forward started his 21st league game of the campaign with the visitors gunning for their 17th win.

Despite dominating the first period, Almeria found it difficult to beat Juan Carlos in the Girona goal as both sides headed into the half goalless.

The visitors then turned to the bench with the introduction of Brian Rodriguez and Uruguay forward proved key when he set up Umar nine minutes after his introduction to score the winner and seal all three points for Almeria.

The win now takes Almeria to second, one point above 3rd place Almeria who drop to second with the race for automatic promotion now very much in their hands.
