It was a mixed night for the Nigerian duo of Umar Sadiq and Kenneth Omeruo as their quest for automatic promotion from the LaLiga 2 suffered a slight setback after both teams failed to win their respective games, reports.

At the Estadio del Mediterraneo in Almeria, Eagles hopeful Sadiq Umar was in the starting line-up as they squared up against table-toppers Espanyol, hoping to close the gap on second place Mallorca in their quest for automatic promotion.

Having failed to score in any of his last two appearances, the former AS Roma striker led the line for the hosts who needed to halt a run of two successive league defeats.

After a goalless first 45 minutes, Umar broke the deadlock five minutes through the restart when he received a delightful ball from Lucas Robertson before outrunning his markers and firing the ball beyond the goalkeeper for 1-0.

The lead however lasted just eight minutes as the visitors equalised via the boots of Landry Diamata before they missed an opportunity to go 2-1 up with Raul de Tomas missing from 12 yards.

Both sides then failed to find the winner with the point keeping Almeria still in 3rd position with 61 points, 7 points behind second-place Mallorca in the race for automatic promotion.

Meanwhile, at the Estadio Municipal de Butarque in Leganes, Super Eagles defender Kenneth Omeruo was given his marching orders after picking up two yellow cards as his Leganes side missed the chance to close in on third place, Almeria, following their 1-1 draw at home to SD Ponferradina.

Sergio Gonzalez put the hosts ahead in the first period before Omeruo saw red for two bookable offenses in the 47th and 73rd minute, with the visitors making the most of their numerical advantage to equalize three minutes later.

The defender will now miss a potential reunion with fellow Nigerian Kelechi Nwakali at the weekend as he serves his one-match suspension with Leganes still 4th on the log.
