Although former Nigerian defender Joseph Yobo retired from football over a decade ago, he continues to inspire his fans—not just with his legendary career, but also with the beautiful love story he shares with his wife, Adaeze Yobo.
The former Super Eagles captain met Adaeze at an event in Nigeria in 2009, introduced by a mutual friend. At the time, Yobo was playing for Everton F.C., but Adaeze initially had reservations about dating a footballer.
“When I knew he was a footballer, I told myself this relationship might not work or lead us anywhere because of the lifestyle of some footballers who have so many girlfriends,” Adaeze shared in an interview.
However, the two quickly became close friends, and within a month, Joseph promised he would marry her. Just two months later, at Heathrow Airport, as Adaeze prepared to travel to Los Angeles for her studies, Joseph proposed. The couple tied the knot on January 1, 2010, in a quiet midnight ceremony in Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria.
Fifteen years later, in 2025, the couple celebrated their milestone wedding anniversary. Their first child, Joey Yobo, was born just three months after the wedding. Two more children followed: Jayden Yobo, born on March 31, 2015, and their daughter, Lexine Yobo, born on February 13, 2017.

Born on April 14, 1990, in Awka, Anambra State, Adaeze has always been ambitious. She has a brother, Chinonso Igwe, and a sister, Amarachi Igwe. While in school, Adaeze was active in debates and theater. Later, she earned a law degree from the University of Abuja. After her marriage, she continued her education, obtaining a psychology degree from the New York Film Academy in Los Angeles in 2010.
From Beauty Queen to Humanitarian
Adaeze’s journey to stardom began in 2008 when she fulfilled her childhood dream by representing Anambra State at the MBGN (Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria) pageant. She emerged as the winner and went on to represent Nigeria at the Miss World competition in Johannesburg, South Africa, where she made it to the top 20 in the “Miss World Talent” category and finished second in the “Miss World Sports” segment.
Following her MBGN win, Adaeze launched the Adaeze Igwe Foundation in 2009. The foundation focused on raising awareness about HIV/AIDS and breast cancer while providing funds to combat malaria and tuberculosis. It also supported education and youth empowerment in rural communities.
